Chaney root is a wooded vine with a thick red underground tuber belonging to the smilax genus.  It is the Jamaican relative to Cuculmeca. This herb’s root is a thicker tuber and has been used for medicine for 1000’s of years, but gained considerable attention in the 16th century when it was discovered by Europeans in India and used to treat syphilis. It was found amongst the peasantry in China and became one of the most traded plant medicines of that day.  China root, as it was called, is a great source of iron and is used to build and strengthen the blood and immune system.

Instructions:

Take a piece of the chopped root and boil in 3 cups of distilled water for 15 minutes. Turn off flame and let steep for 15 minutes. Strain and drink a few cups per day. Store used roots in freezer for reuse.  It pairs well with its cousin sarsaparilla to make great tasting blood tonic.
